Dodging corrupt police in Laos

During our stay in Luang Prabang, Laos we were stopped along with a handful of locals for riding our scooter without helmets (completely our fault). We were prepared to face the consequences and pay a fine – but then we realised the police just wanted to bribe money out of us.

Our belief is that corruption starts from the bottom up and for this reason had agreed to do all we could to avoid paying bribes before we even started our trip. Although the police became frustrated and threatened us when we refused to pay them off, we stuck to our beliefs and eventually were let go without paying a single cent.
