Hail storm in the middle of the Australian desert

This was our most unexpected experience along the trip so far. We rocked up in sunny Alice Springs which, for those who don’t know, is in the middle of the Australian desert. Half an hour later it was hailing stones the size of golf balls! We were astonished that no damage was done to the van on the day (although a couple of hundred kms later we realised the hail had actually created a crack in the windscreen – it grew so big that we had to replace the windscreen once we reached Adelaide).
